A 28-year-old Hatcliffe man, Leo Baureni, has appeared at the Harare Magistrates' Courts charged with theft, following allegations of stealing funds from a complainant’s bank accounts.
Baureni is accused of unlawfully accessing the accounts of Admire Bayana and withdrawing substantial amounts of money. He is set to appear in court again on February 10, 2025.
According to court documents, on December 22, 2024, Bayana met Baureni at Eastgate, Harare, intending to purchase a Tecno phone using his POSB ATM card. The card was linked to both a Nostro account, which had a balance of US$9,272.70, and a ZWG account holding ZWG$12,999.
Bayana reportedly swiped his card twice during the transaction while entering his PIN, with Baureni allegedly observing him both times. Due to network challenges, the transaction failed, and Baureni returned the card to Bayana.
However, upon returning home, Bayana discovered that the ATM card in his possession was not his but had been swapped. He later realized that Baureni had allegedly stolen all the funds from both accounts after gaining access to his PIN.
Bayana suffered a total loss of US$9,272 and ZWG$12,999.
The court case continues.
