India House was abuzz with festivity as dignitaries, diplomats, and esteemed guests gathered to celebrate India’s 76th Republic Day.

Hosted by the Indian Ambassador, Bramha Kumar, the event underscored the enduring diplomatic and cultural ties between India and Zimbabwe. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Deputy Minister, Madam Sheillah Makoto, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Marking 45 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, Ambassador Bramha Kumar reflected on their deep-rooted historical ties, which date back to the era of the Munhumutapa Kingdom. He emphasized the strong foundation of solidarity between India and Zimbabwe, stating:

"India and Zimbabwe share a proud history of friendship, with India standing in support of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. Today, our partnership is stronger than ever, driven by robust economic cooperation and dynamic cultural exchanges."

He further highlighted India’s significant role in Zimbabwe’s development, particularly in infrastructure, education, and capacity building. With Indian investments in Zimbabwe exceeding US$600 million, he noted the increasing academic collaborations between the two nations:

"Indian universities have become a preferred destination for Zimbabwean students, with over 5,000 currently pursuing higher education in India."

Deputy Minister Sheillah Makoto lauded India’s contributions to Zimbabwe’s technological and economic advancement, particularly through the establishment of 17 Indo-Zim Technological Centres:

"These centres were upgraded with the latest Computer Numerical Control  machines in 2022, further strengthening education, scientific research, and technological cooperation between our nations," she remarked.

She also acknowledged the benefits of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme, which has played a crucial role in skills development in Zimbabwe:

"The ITEC programme aligns with Zimbabwe’s aspiration of attaining a knowledge-based economy and has provided valuable opportunities for our professionals," she stated.

Expressing optimism about the flourishing economic partnership, the Deputy Minister added:

"It is encouraging to see that trade and economic linkages between Zimbabwe and India continue to grow stronger."

She cited the presence of over 25 major Indian and Indian-Zimbabwean-owned companies investing in the country, including Varun Beverages, a leading producer of carbonated drinks, and Ralles Company, a key pharmaceutical supplier to CAPS (Pvt) Ltd.

The reception concluded on a high note, celebrating not just India’s national achievements but also the ever-strengthening India-Zim alliance—a partnership built on mutual respect, shared aspirations, and a vision for collective progress.
