A sex worker accused of robbery and assaulting a client has been denied bail.

Portia Nyarai, 34, and her alleged accomplice, Liberty Gumbo, 22, were remanded in custody by Magistrate Isheunesu Matova after the court determined they had no fixed abode.

They are set to appear in court again on February 18, 2025.

Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu told the court that the incident occurred in the early hours of February 3, 2025, at Big Apple Night Club in Harare’s Central Business District.

At around 2:30 am, the complainant allegedly hired Nyarai for her services, agreeing to pay US$5.

However, before the transaction could be completed, Nyarai began screaming, accusing the complainant of stealing from her.

Gumbo, along with four unidentified male accomplices, allegedly attacked the complainant using stones and a homemade hammer, striking him repeatedly.

During the assault, Nyarai reportedly hit the complainant on the back of his head with a stone, causing him to collapse.

The group then stole the complainant’s cellphone, valued at US$150, before fleeing the scene, leaving him critically injured.

Well-wishers assisted the victim and helped him file a police report before he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The stolen cellphone has not yet been recovered.
