A Harare magistrate has sentenced Janet Maromo to five years in prison for trafficking a two-day-old baby from South Africa to Zimbabwe.
Maromo was convicted under the Trafficking in Persons Act after unlawfully transporting the infant across the border.
The court heard that the baby’s biological mother had sold the child to Maromo for an undisclosed amount.
Instead of following legal adoption procedures, Maromo traveled with the newborn into Zimbabwe.
In sentencing, the magistrate considered mitigating factors, including Maromo’s lack of awareness regarding adoption laws in both countries and her limited understanding of legal processes.
The court also acknowledged the role played by the biological mother in the transaction.
Despite these factors, Maromo was handed an effective five-year prison term.
