The Zimbabwe Republic Police has announced that all vehicles without registration plates will be impounded, including government-owned vehicles.
ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated, "The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns the public against driving vehicles with no registration plates." He cited the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act, which mandates that all vehicles, whether privately or company-owned, must have proper number plates while on the road.
Nyathi confirmed that government vehicles are not exempt and reiterated that unregistered vehicles found on the roads will be confiscated.
The police also warned against the use of unauthorized lighting, such as ballad or bar lights, which violate road safety regulations. "Any vehicle driven on the roads while fitted with ballad or bar lights in clear contravention of the country's laws and road safety requirements will be impounded, and the owner or driver prosecuted," Nyathi said.
In a related development, Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba has directed officers to arrest commuter omnibus drivers ferrying touts hanging onto moving vehicles. The touts who ride clinging onto the back of the vans are popularly known as “zvinamira”.
Authorities state that this practice, common in urban areas, poses safety risks to passengers and other road users.
Law enforcement operations to enforce compliance with traffic regulations are ongoing.
