The Ministry of Health and Child Care has released its Weekly Disease Report for the week ending February 2, 2025, highlighting a surge in cases of malaria and diarrhoea across Zimbabwe.
A total of 3,912 suspected cases of influenza/common cold were reported, with no deaths recorded. Manicaland (1,439 cases) and Mashonaland East (967 cases) had the highest numbers. The cumulative total now stands at 13,471 suspected cases, with no fatalities.
Seven new suspected cases of measles were reported, with no deaths recorded. Harare reported three cases, Mashonaland Central had two, while Mashonaland East and Mashonaland West recorded one each. The cumulative total stands at 34 suspected cases, with no fatalities.
A significant 8,464 new cases of common diarrhoea were reported, affecting 3,358 children under five years old. The hardest-hit provinces were Mashonaland Central (1,178 cases) and Mashonaland East (1,157 cases). The cumulative total has reached 35,265 cases, with 17 deaths reported.
Zimbabwe recorded 2,009 new malaria cases this week, with six deaths. Manicaland (824 cases) and Mashonaland West (527 cases) were the most affected provinces. The fatalities occurred in Mutare, Chimanimani, Buhera, Rushinga, and Makonde districts. The cumulative total now stands at 5,710 cases, with 17 deaths and a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.3%.
The country reported 24 suspected cholera cases and one suspected death, with 23 cases recorded in Mazowe District. The cumulative total is now 107 suspected cases and one suspected death, though no cases have been confirmed.
There were 545 new cases of dysentery this week, with no deaths reported. Mashonaland Central (114 cases) and Mashonaland West (97 cases) recorded the highest numbers. The cumulative total has risen to 2,416 cases, with one death.
No new suspected cases or deaths from typhoid were reported. The cumulative total remains at two suspected cases, with no fatalities.
