The City of Masvingo is set to develop a new central business district on a 24-hectare piece of land between Ndarama High School and the Mucheke River, later this year.
Town Clerk Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa confirmed that infrastructure designs for water, sewer systems, roads, storm-water drainage, and electricity are nearing completion.
“By August this year, we should be physically on the ground, and the sale of stands is expected to start around that time,” said Mukaratirwa.
He said the project, part of the city’s 20-year master plan, aims to address the growing demand for commercial spaces and ease congestion in the existing CBD.
The new CBD will stretch from the Benjamin Burombo Government building to Old Railways, southeast of the current business hub, effectively dividing the city by the Mucheke River, a key tributary of Lake Mutirikwi.
Plans for the area include shopping malls and a hotel overlooking the newly refurbished Masvingo-Beitbridge highway.
Unregulated traffic and vendor activities have left most of Zimbabwe's CBD in a mess.
