A chilling case of familial betrayal has resulted in a 28-year-old man from Maphisa, Matabeleland South province, being sentenced to 15 years in prison for the repeated rape of his 12-year-old biological sister. The Gwanda magistrates' court heard harrowing details of the abuse, culminating in a swift and decisive judgment.
The court proceedings revealed that the heinous crimes occurred on two separate occasions within the family home, shattering the victim's sense of safety and trust. The first incident took place on December 24, 2024, when the perpetrator and his young sister shared the same bedroom.
The abuse continued into the new year, with a second assault occurring on January 28, 2025. The victim, burdened by the trauma, bravely confided in a neighbor, prompting immediate action. "The matter was revealed when the complainant told a neighbour, who then informed the neighbourhood watch," stated the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe in a released statement.
The community's swift response led to a carefully planned ambush. The neighbourhood watch, acting on the victim's disclosure, discovered the man naked in bed with his sister, providing irrefutable evidence of the abuse.
A police report was promptly filed, leading to the man's arrest and subsequent trial. The gravity of the crimes and the vulnerability of the victim resulted in the severe 15-year sentence, reflecting the court's commitment to protecting children and punishing such abhorrent acts.
