Robbery Surge Prompts Security Alert for Bulawayo Fuel Stations

A surge in armed robberies targeting fuel service stations in Bulawayo has forced businesses to rethink their operations, with some opting to shut down at night.

The worrying trend, which began last year, has seen criminals repeatedly targeting these establishments and getting away with large sums of foreign currency.

The escalating threat has left fuel station owners and employees vulnerable, affecting both their livelihoods and the critical service they provide to the community.

In the latest attack, a gang raided a service station in the Kelvin Industrial Area last Tuesday night, escaping with US$2,374 and ZAR115,235.

According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the robbers struck around 9 PM as the station owner sat in his Toyota Hilux nearby.

“He saw the suspects attacking his employees. When they noticed they had been seen, they also turned on him, firing shots into the air to prevent any interference,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

The robbers forced workers to lie on the ground before looting the cash.

In a separate incident, the same gang allegedly targeted a service station in Tshabalala, stealing US$440 and hijacking a Toyota Altezza worth US$3,200, which they later abandoned in Pumula.

“They discharged firearms into the air and assaulted workers before hijacking a man’s vehicle,” Commissioner Nyathi added.

He urged the public to assist in identifying the suspects, who were wearing balaclavas during the attacks.

“The police appeal for any information that can lead to their arrest. These criminals live among us, and we urge the public not to shelter them, as they are extremely dangerous,” he warned.

To combat the growing threat, Commissioner Nyathi advised business owners to enhance security by installing CCTV systems and electronic alarm devices.
