The sun beat down on the dusty training grounds of Beitbridge, but the spirited Highlanders squad, affectionately known as Bosso, were undeterred. Taking full advantage of the FIFA international break, the Bulawayo giants embarked on a week-long training camp, a strategic move aimed at forging a tighter bond and sharpening their edge before their crucial clash against the newly-promoted Scottland FC at the iconic Barbourfields Stadium.
Coach Kelvin Kaindu, radiating optimism, expressed his satisfaction with the players' response during their border town sojourn. "Our objective wasn't just about tactical drills," Kaindu explained, his voice echoing across the field. "It was about building cohesion, fostering camaraderie, and ensuring peak physical conditioning."
The camp's intensity was evident, with players pushing their limits in extended training sessions. "The response has been tremendous," Kaindu beamed. "We've seen significant improvements, and we hope this positive momentum translates into our upcoming league games."
Adding a competitive edge to their training, Bosso was scheduled to play a closed-door practice match against a local top side, a final test before returning to Bulawayo. Kaindu remained tight-lipped about the opponent, maintaining an air of strategic secrecy.
The Zambian gaffer revealed that the camp served a dual purpose: to address the lack of proper pre-season preparation and to integrate the influx of new talent. "We didn't have the ideal pre-season," Kaindu admitted, "and this camp allowed us to rectify that. It was also crucial for the new players to gel with the existing squad."
Despite a rocky start to their transfer window due to a FIFA ban, Bosso managed to bolster their ranks before the March 31st deadline. New faces like defender Malvern Hativagoni (Bulawayo Chiefs), striker Tendai Muvuti (Hwange), midfielder Hubert Ncube (ZPC Hwange), forward Panashe Mushonga (Chegutu Pirates), and Mbonisi Ncube (Botswana's BDF XI) joined the squad, injecting fresh energy and talent. Additionally, promising juniors Luckmore Mutumbi and Junior Chiweta were promoted to the senior team, signaling a commitment to nurturing local talent.
"We are maximizing these few days of the international break," Kaindu emphasized. "This time is invaluable for team bonding, especially with the new additions. The weather here in Beitbridge has been similar to Bulawayo, which has been helpful."
The coach highlighted the benefits of extended time together. "When you're with everyone constantly, it's easier to structure your program," he explained. "We can push the players beyond their normal limits. Our primary focus is team building and utilizing this time for enhanced conditioning."
