Two Chinese enterprises have added 35 MW to the national power grid, with 320 MW more on course to be delivered in a short time to come.
This was revealed by the Ministry of Energy and Power Development in its 100 Days Cycle update.
Maxmind’s thermal power plant with a 35 MW capacity is up and running at Sabi Star Lithium Mine in Buhera.
The Zhongzhing Heli Thermal Power Plant in Hwange is partially operational, adding 20 MW to the national grid from its targeted 240 MW capacity.
Dinson is set to add 20 MW with a thermal plant at Manhize.
These developments add to other Chinese-driven investments in energy, which include African Transmission Corporation’s 25 MW Nyabira Solar Plant, which is in commercial operation with plans to increase output to 100 MW.
In a related development, Norton residents have objected to plans by Sunny Yi Feng to install a 210 thermal power plant in the area, citing environmental and health concerns.
Many businesses in Zimbabwe are turning to independent power production to avoid power outages due to load shedding as the country’s capacity is way below demand.
Low Kariba water levels have contributed to the incessant shortages as the hydro station is operating below capacity.
