The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe has intervened in the ongoing dispute over the US$150 tariff imposed by the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association on cover bands, ordering an immediate suspension of payments pending further consultations.

The decision, announced during a meeting involving NACZ, ZIMURA representatives, and copyright holders, comes amid concerns over transparency and the fairness of the policy, which many argue does not align with international best practices.

ZIMURA introduced the tariff as a licensing fee for bands performing copyrighted music, a move that sparked backlash from musicians who claim the policy was implemented without adequate stakeholder engagement.

NACZ has now mandated broader consultations to ensure the rights of both artists and performers are balanced while advocating for reforms that promote fairness in Zimbabwe’s music industry.

The suspension marks a significant victory for cover bands, who had expressed fears that the tariff would cripple their earnings and deter live music performances.

NACZ emphasized the importance of copyright awareness and education, urging all industry players to respect intellectual property while ensuring policies remain practical and sustainable.
