Zimbabwean scientist Dr. Charlene Dambire has been honored with the 2025 Black in Plant Science Research Excellence Award for her outstanding contributions to plant science research and her efforts to promote diversity in STEM fields.
The University of Nottingham research fellow was recognized for her work analyzing plant responses to environmental stress, particularly drought conditions relevant to Zimbabwe’s agricultural challenges.
“The potential of my plant science to address critical economic and societal issues in Zimbabwe and globally further motivated me to pursue research into this field. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to improving the livelihoods of people through my research as agriculture plays a central role in both the economy and food production,” said Dr Dambire.
Her research focuses on understanding molecular pathways that help crops survive harsh conditions, with potential applications for improving food security in drought-prone regions like Zimbabwe.
Beyond her scientific achievements, Dr. Dambire was acknowledged for her commitment to advancing equality in science through her mentorship platform Ideas2Careers, which connects Black girls with STEM professionals.
She emphasized how her Zimbabwean background inspired her research direction, noting that agriculture plays a central role in both the economy and food production back home.
The annual awards celebrate both research excellence and contributions to fostering inclusive scientific communities among UK-based Black plant scientists.
Dr. Dambire credited her professional growth to mentorship from Professor Michael Holdsworth at the University of Nottingham, who supported her development as a researcher.
As an advocate for underrepresented groups in STEM, Dr. Dambire hopes her achievement will inspire more young Black students to pursue plant science careers, particularly those from African backgrounds who can apply their knowledge to local challenges.
“For Black girls who dare to dream and aspire to pursue STEM careers, I would say it's crucial to embrace your identity and recognize the unique value you bring to the field. Celebrate your individuality and seek out role models who have walked the path you aim to follow, let their experiences help guide you on your journey,” said Dr Dambire.
