In a significant milestone for Zimbabwean football, referee Thabani Ruzario has been selected as the only representative from Zimbabwe on the officiating panel for the CAF TotalEnergies U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, set to take place in Egypt from April 27 to May 18.
He is one of five officials from the Southern African region, three coming from South Africa and the other being from Eswatini. According to a communique released by CAF, officials have been categorised into such committees as the referees themselves, their assistants, instructors, assesors, IT support staff and VAR technicians.
This prestigious assignment highlights not only Ruzario's skills and experience, but also the growing recognition of Zimbabwean referees on the continental stage.
Ruzario's inclusion in the tournament reflects the CAF's commitment to promoting refereeing talent across Africa. His extensive experience in officiating domestic and international matches has earned him respect among peers and players alike. Ruzario's selection is a testament to his dedication and professionalism, marking a proud moment for Zimbabwean football.
Historically, Zimbabwe has produced several referees who have officiated in high-profile international tournaments. Among them is Mandla Moyo, who made headlines during the 2019 CAF Champions League and the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. His ability to manage high-stakes games has significantly contributed to the credibility of Zimbabwean referees on the international stage.
Another notable figure is Mavis Chidzonga, who has officiated in various women's competitions, including the CAF Women's Champions League. Her groundbreaking work has paved the way for female referees in Zimbabwe and across Africa, underlining the importance of diversity in officiating.
The growing presence of Zimbabwean referees in high-profile assignments not only boosts the nation's profile in African football but also inspires a new generation of referees to pursue their dreams. As the CAF TotalEnergies U20 AFCON approaches, all eyes will be on Ruzario and his colleagues, as they strive to uphold the integrity and spirit of the game on one of the continent's biggest stages.
With Ruzario's selection, Zimbabwe continues to make its mark in the world of football officiating, showcasing the talent and dedication that exists within the nation. As the tournament unfolds, fans and players alike will be hopeful for a successful and fair competition under Ruzario’s watchful eye.
