52 Malaria Deaths recorded Since January

Health officials have reported a sharp rise in malaria cases, with 3,304 new infections and eight deaths recorded this week.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, the fatalities occurred in Mutare District (2), Chimanimani District (1), Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe (1), Makonde District (1), Sanyati District (1), Mpilo Hospital (1), and Sally Mugabe Hospital (1). Among the reported cases, 321 involved children under the age of five.

“Manicaland Province recorded the highest number of malaria cases, with 1,939 reported, followed by Mashonaland Central with 484 cases,” a health ministry official stated. “Since the beginning of the year, the total number of malaria cases has risen to 19,278, with 52 deaths.”

In addition to malaria, health officials confirmed 489 cases of dysentery this week, though no fatalities have been reported. 

“The highest number of dysentery cases was recorded in Manicaland, with 123 infections, followed by Mashonaland West with 83 cases,” the official added. 

“The cumulative total for dysentery now stands at 5,809 cases and three deaths.”

Health authorities are urging the public to take preventive measures, including using mosquito nets, seeking early treatment for symptoms, and improving hygiene to curb the spread of waterborne diseases.

With malaria season at its peak, officials stress that early detection and prompt treatment are crucial in reducing fatalities.
