The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe has launched a dedicated emergency call centre, introducing the toll-free number 591 to enhance response times and improve access to emergency services across the country.

The new hotline will link the public directly to key responders such as the police, ambulance services, and insurance companies, creating a more coordinated and timely response in the event of road accidents and other emergencies.

ICZ Chairperson David Nyabadza said during a press conference on Thursday that the 591 line is now active and accessible to the general public.

“Many people, especially passengers in public transport, are unaware of their insurance rights. This service is designed to bridge that gap while ensuring swift emergency response,” said Nyabadza.

The call centre will operate daily from 8 AM to 9 PM, after which an automated service will handle emergency requests.

ICZ Chief Executive Officer Donald Muthe added that the initiative is part of broader efforts to support vulnerable communities.

“We’re investing in inclusive projects aligned with national development priorities and global goals. Our aim is to ensure no one is left behind, especially in accessing safety and insurance services,” he said.

The ICZ hopes the 591 number will be a game-changer in emergency coordination and public awareness on insurance entitlements.
