Zimbabwe's 45th Independence Day celebrations faced significant disruption today as heavy rains swept through Nembudziya, Gokwe North, the official venue for the national event.

The downpours, which began early in the morning, resulted in waterlogged grounds and logistical setbacks, impacting attendance and the smooth flow of the much-anticipated festivities.

The celebrations, themed “Zim@45: Devolve and Develop Together Towards Vision 2030,” w are expected to draw over 60 000 attendees from across the country. However, the unexpected weather has raised concerns about the safety and comfort of participants, including dignitaries, performers, and members of the public.

Local authorities and emergency services were swiftly mobilized to manage the situation. Temporary shelters were erected, and drainage improvement efforts commenced to ensure the venue remained functional. Despite the initial disruption, the heavy downpours eventually subsided, leaving behind only intermittent drizzle.

Nick Mangwana, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, confirmed the situation via his social media platforms, stating that the venues of the national events in Gokwe North were experiencing heavy downpours, but there were no changes to the scheduled plans. He explained that in many African cultures, a downpour during a significant event is often viewed as a positive omen or blessing from the ancestors or gods. Rain is believed to signify the ancestors' approval, blessings, or presence at the event, and is thought to bring good fortune, prosperity, and abundance to the individuals or community involved.

Mangwana concluded by noting the resilience of the crowd, saying, “Gokwe maropafadzwa. People are plodding in their numbers to the venue. The downpours have stopped. There is just some intermittent drizzling.”

Despite the weather, the program is set to continue largely as planned, with real-time adjustments, including the relocation or postponement of certain performances and sporting events.
