A serene morning just outside Gwanda Town erupted into chaos today when a Bulawayo-Beitbridge Railway goods train collided with Rovos Rail, the train that ferries tourists from South Africa to the Victoria Falls.

The devastating impact in the Hantinya area left a scene of wreckage and resulted in multiple injuries, primarily among the crew members of both trains.

Eyewitness accounts reported a loud sound at impact and a scene littered with smashed glass and twisted metal.

The Gwanda Fire Brigade worked with other first responders to attend to the injured, who received immediate on-site medical attention before being taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital.

Details on the extent of injuries remain sketchy.

The National Railways of Zimbabwe is on record stating that vandalism of rail infrastructure, primarily through theft, has compromised rail safety, as it may compromise key signaling systems.
