Siblings in Court Over US$6.5K Car Import Scam

Munyaradzi Mashiri – Court Correspondent

A brother and sister have been taken to court on allegations of fraud after allegedly scamming a woman out of US$6,500 in a fake car import scheme.

Lynnet Rusere, 40, and Simbarashe Nota, 47, appeared at the Harare Magistrates' Courts facing fraud charges.

Lorraine Muchenje entrusted the accused siblings with money to import a Toyota Aqua from Japan.

In June 2024, Rusere reportedly learned of Muchenje’s plans and hatched a deceitful scheme with her brother, Nota.

Rusere allegedly referred Muchenje to Nota, claiming they could import the vehicle together.

Nota falsely confirmed his ability to import the car despite lacking the capacity to do so.

Muchenje paid US$6,500 to Nota in Rusere’s presence, believing the money would secure the Toyota Aqua.

The court heard that Nota disappeared with the funds, prompting Muchenje to investigate.

Upon confrontation, Nota admitted to sharing the money with his sister, Rusere.

Muchenje reported the scam to Harare Central Police on April 26, 2025. The case was referred to CID CCD Harare the following day.
