In a bold daytime heist, two armed robbers stormed a supermarket in the Kelvin Industrial area on Monday, escaping with over US$5 000 and ZAR250 in cash.

The robbers, wearing surgical masks and armed with a pistol, struck around 11:40am when the store was packed with customers. They ordered shoppers and staff to lie down as they emptied tills and a safe, leaving the community in shock.

“It all happened so fast. One moment I was picking up groceries, the next I was ducking for cover,” recounted one shopper who requested anonymity.

Witnesses said panic spread quickly as one of the robbers brandished the pistol, threatening anyone who moved. They took US$4 600 from the tills before confronting a manager in the cashier’s office and demanding the keys to the safe. The robbers made off with an additional US$417 and ZAR250 from the office.

Bulawayo provincial acting police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the incident.

“A police report was made and investigations revealed that the suspects fled the scene in a silver Honda Fit with no registration plates. The total value stolen is US$5,017 and ZAR250. Nothing has been recovered,” she said.

Police have launched a manhunt and are appealing to the public for assistance.

“We urge anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact any nearest police station,” added Inspector Msebele. She also warned business owners against keeping large sums of cash on-site.

The suspects remain at large.
