Men’s Health in Focus: Prostate Cancer Awareness Drive Set for June 28

In a bid to raise awareness and encourage health-conscious behaviour among men, Beginnings Pharmaceuticals will host a Prostate Cancer Conference on June 28, 2025, at Trinity Methodist Church, located at the corner of 3rd Street and Central Avenue in Harare.

The conference, which runs from 08:00 to 12:00 hrs, offers free entry and on-site prostate cancer screening.

Munyori, a representative of Doctors and Nurses on a Mission Trust, the medical outreach initiative supporting the event, says the conference was inspired by the low turnout of men during past medical missions.

“I noticed how men take prostate cancer lightly,” he said. “I hope that through the conference, we can raise awareness on the condition and encourage men to become health conscious and to get checked out regularly."

With Father's Day in mind, the organisers deliberately aligned the conference with the occasion to honour men while spotlighting a serious health concern

“This conference, in commemoration of Father’s Day, shall encourage men to come together and come up with solutions that can be beneficial in the fight against prostate cancer,” Munyori added.

Prostate cancer remains one of the deadliest diseases affecting men globally. According to the World Health Organization, over 1.5 million men** had died from prostate cancer as of February 2024.

The conference aims not only to offer medical screening but also to combat misinformation and provide education.

The key goals of the event include: Raising awareness on prostate cancer and its symptoms, promoting mental health among men and offering free prostate cancer screening for men aged 40 and above

Munyori pointed out that many men in Zimbabwe still lack access to critical health information, especially in rural areas.

“From my observations, there isn’t much information on prostate cancer,” he said. “Through this conference, we hope to find ways to disseminate information to men in rural areas and raise awareness more broadly.”

He also stressed the critical role of families in encouraging men to seek medical attention.

“As breadwinners, men are often too busy working to consider their own health. By the time they’re diagnosed, the condition has usually progressed, making treatment difficult.”

Clearing the Air on Myths

The event will also address common misconceptions surrounding prostate cancer, such as the false beliefs that men must ejaculate over 50 times a month or engage in excessive sexual activity to prevent the disease.

Medical professionals from clinics such as Men’s Clinic International, Men’s Health Clinic, and the Kubatana Prostate Cancer Support Group will be present to provide accurate information and screening services.

Munyori emphasised the role of preventative measures.

“Diet, lifestyle, and early detection play an important role in the fight against prostate cancer. With awareness and regular screening, deaths due to the condition can be alleviated.”
