A 24-year-old man has appeared in court facing charges of reckless driving and operating a public service vehicle without a valid driver’s licence while carrying 15 passengers.
Clemence Azilori was allegedly seen weaving through traffic, driving against oncoming vehicles, and endangering the lives of other road users.
He appeared before magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini at the Harare Magistrates' Courts, charged with reckless driving and driving without a licence. He is expected to return to court on June 23.
According to the State, represented by prosecutor Ropi Kanchelskis, the incident occurred on June 13 at around 4:00 PM. Azilori was driving a Nissan NV350 minibus (registration number AGZ 2274) along Milton Street in Avondale, heading to Chinhoyi from the CBD with 15 passengers on board.
Upon reaching the intersection of Milton Street and Cork Road, Azilori entered the right-turn lane, suggesting he intended to turn into Cork Road. However, when the traffic light turned green, he veered out of his lane and moved into the lane going straight, cutting off another driver who had the right of way.
The other driver, who turned out to be Chief Superintendent Machingura, signaled Azilori to stop for a caution. Instead, Azilori sped off and began driving recklessly—swerving between lanes and even driving against oncoming traffic.
He was eventually caught in a traffic jam near Avondale Shopping Centre, where he was arrested by Assistant Inspector Panganai and Chief Superintendent Machingura.
After being escorted to Avondale Police Station, it was discovered that Azilori was not in possession of a valid driver's licence.
