A Harare commuter omnibus driver who drove against oncoming traffic at a busy city intersection has been jailed for two years and permanently banned from driving.
Freedom Ruzvidzo ,32, of Hatcliffe was convicted by the Harare Magistrates’ Court after being found guilty of reckless driving when he entered a one-way lane and obstructed other motorists during peak-hour traffic at the intersection of Second Street (Sam Nujoma) and Upper East Road.
The court heard that Ruzvidzo, who was driving a Toyota Hiace, disregarded traffic rules and endangered the lives of other road users. Although no injuries were recorded, the magistrate ruled that his actions posed a serious threat to public safety.
As part of the sentence, Ruzvidzo’s driver’s licence was cancelled, and he was permanently prohibited from driving vehicle classes 2, 4, and 5, which cover minibuses, trucks, and heavy vehicles.
The court stressed that reckless driving would not be tolerated, warning that offenders who endanger lives by ignoring traffic regulations will face stiff penalties, including imprisonment and lifetime driving bans.
Authorities have repeatedly cautioned motorists against reckless conduct, warning that every negligent driver is a potential killer on the country’s roads.
