Man Smashes Car, Steals Property Worth US$18K

A 28-year-old man who allegedly smashed a car window and stole cash and valuables worth US$18 200 has appeared in court facing theft charges.

Washington Musapenda appeared before the Harare Magistrate's Court accused of breaking into a Toyota Prado and stealing US$14 000 in cash, multiple laptops, clothes, and documents.

According to the State, on June 13, 2025, the complainant parked his Toyota Prado (registration number AGA 2431) at No. 49 Emmerson Mnangagwa Road, Harare. After locking the vehicle, he proceeded to dine at Wangi Restaurant.

While he was away, two suspects reportedly approached the car, smashed the left rear window, and made off with the cash, two Huawei laptops, a MacBook, an HP laptop, and two black bags containing clothing and documents.

The complainant heard his car alarm go off and rushed back, only to find the window broken and his belongings missing.

On June 20, police received a tip-off linking the accused to the theft. Musapenda was arrested, and authorities managed to recover two laptops and some of the stolen documents.

The total value of the stolen property is estimated at US$18,200.
