Zimbabwean football is in deep mourning following the tragic passing of Warriors midfielder Brian Banda, who died in a road traffic accident on Sunday. The accident occurred along the Zvishavane-Bulawayo Highway, just a day after the 29-year-old had watched his FC Platinum teammates draw 1-1 against Simba Bhora at Mandava Stadium, where he was sidelined due to injury.
Banda's untimely death leaves a significant void in the heart of Zimbabwean football, a loss keenly felt by the national team, his club, and the wider football community.
Warriors head coach Michael Nees paid a heartfelt tribute to Banda, emphasizing his profound impact beyond the pitch. "Brian’s presence in the Warriors squad was always felt, not just through his talent, but through his discipline, his work ethic, and his respect for the badge,” Nees said in a statement released by Zifa yesterday. “This is a painful loss for all of us who had the honour of working with him.”
ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi echoed these sentiments, describing Banda as an exceptional player and a humble figure. “We are devastated by the loss of Brian Banda. He was a remarkable footballer and a humble leader, both on and off the field,” Magwizi stated. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his teammates at FC Platinum, and all those who were touched by his life and career. Zimbabwean football has lost one of its finest.”
Banda was a highly celebrated midfielder in the local Castle Lager Premier Soccer League and a vital part of the national team squad. His prowess on the field was matched by the positive impact he had on his teammates, fans, and the broader football fraternity.
FC Platinum held a funeral wake for Banda at their home ground, Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane, yesterday. Details regarding his burial remain unconfirmed, but mourners are currently gathered at 7550 Caravan in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo.
Brian Banda will be remembered not only for his impressive talent as an athlete but also for his warm character and the inspiration he provided. His legacy as a beloved individual and a dedicated footballer will undoubtedly continue to resonate within Zimbabwean football for years to come.
