Soccer legends and musicians will engage in a football charity match in Harare on Saturday, December 10, that is aimed at raising money and goods in kind for the less privileged.
Being held at Allan Wilson School, the event is a brainchild of a local corporate, Destiny Media Incorporated, in partnership with NewZimbabwe.com and involves a total of four matches on the card.
According to Destiny Incorporated general manager Tatenda Madzingo, some of the yesteryear soccer players who will take part include Gilbert Mushangazhike, Norman Maroto, Desmond Maringwa and David Sengu. On the musicians’ side will be the likes of King Shaddy, Shinsoman, Peter Moyo and Ex-Q.
Said Madzingo in an interview, “This is our first such function which will begin with Harare, but with hopes to make it national, bigger and better in the coming editions.
“Our aim is to fundraise for cash and materials which include books, second hand clothing and sanitaryware, among other items, and we have pledged to reciprocate donations with services that we offer to the equivalent of what would have been brought to the table by the donors.”
He said tickets will be on sale for a raffle in which winners stand to walk away with prizes courtesy of a sponsor, Rescue Cleaners, which specialises in the manufacture of detergents.
The curtain-raising matches will be between Total Academy U12 whose students will play their mothers. The youngsters will then go on to play the Archiford Gutu U12 Academy, with the third match of the day being between the latters’ U20 sides.
This will culminate in the main event – the legends versus the musicians. Madzingo said two other organisations, Hope Tariro Trust of Glenview and Total Football Academy, were also assisting in organising.
Traditionally and annually, music promoter Partson Chimbodza (Chipaz) used to host similar matches at Gwanzura, but the fixture is now conspicuous by its absence on the calendar of his company.
