ZESA Holdings has announced new interim leadership appointments following the death of long-serving executive chairman, Dr. Sydney Gata.
Engineer Cletus Nyachowe has been appointed as the interim Chief Executive Officer, while Albert Joel Nduna will assume the role of acting board chairman.
The appointments mark a significant transition for the power utility, which is undergoing restructuring under the Mutapa Investment Fund.
A key part of this transformation is the decision to separate the roles of CEO and board chair—positions that had previously been merged under Gata’s leadership.
In a statement, ZESA said the appointments are part of efforts to ensure continuity, stability, and effective governance during the transition period.
Dr Gata, who passed away earlier this month, had been a central figure in Zimbabwe’s energy sector for decades. His tenure was marked by both expansion initiatives and controversy, as he navigated ZESA through complex operational and political environments.
The restructuring process, now underway, is expected to align ZESA’s operations with corporate governance best practices and enhance accountability. The Mutapa Investment Fund, which now oversees the utility’s operations, is steering the reconfiguration to make the parastatal more commercially viable.
Both Nyachowe and Nduna bring extensive experience to their respective roles, with expectations high that they will guide ZESA through this critical transition phase.
