Socialite and dancehall artist Millicent Tsitsi Chimonyo, popularly known as Malloti, appeared before a Harare magistrate on Thursday facing allegations of cyberbullying Passion Java.

Prosecutors allege that in June this year, Malloti used social media platforms to post content deemed to have harassed or caused emotional distress to the controversial clergyman.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to her arrest earlier this week.

Malloti’s lawyer, Dumisani Mthombeni, told the court that his client, who is pregnant and due to deliver soon, spent two nights in custody at Machipisa Police Station without being informed of the charges until the following morning.

He also raised concerns over her medical condition, saying it required urgent monitoring.

The State did not oppose bail, and Magistrate Dennis Mangosi granted Malloti bail of US$100.

She is expected to return to court on a date yet to be set.

Multiple sources indicated that Prophet Java has since withdrawn his complaint, but court officials said the case will proceed until the withdrawal is formally recorded and processed.

The charge falls under Zimbabwe’s Cyber and Data Protection Act, which criminalises online harassment and cyberbullying. Convictions can carry fines, community service, or custodial sentences, depending on the severity of the offence.

Lawyer Obey Shava commented on the case, saying: “Observe the selective enforcement of our cyberbullying laws. They’re used to protect people in high offices and those connected to the system. We are witnessing an excessive abuse of power. At any rate, not every offence justifies incarceration. It’s rule by law, not rule of law.”
