SRC calls for ZRP Board resignation

The Sports and Recreation Commission has called for the immediate resignation of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union National Executive Board and National Executive Committee, citing governance failures and breaches of policy.

In a letter dated 4 September 2023 and addressed to the ZRU Chief Executive Officer, SRC Director-General H.E. Gadzirayi said the current state of affairs within the union had damaged both the administration and development of rugby in the country.

“Having noted the current governance environment within the Zimbabwe Rugby Union and the attendant negative impact to the administration and development of the sport of rugby, the Sports and Recreation Commission strongly recommends the immediate resignation of the entire ZRU National Executive Board and the National Executive Committee,” the letter reads.

GovernanceThe SRC invoked Policy 4.25 (5) of its Policies and Procedures for the Registration and Operations of National Sport Associations, which empowers the commission to step in where poor governance or risks to the national interest are evident.

“This recommendation has become necessary in order to facilitate the restoration of confidence, integrity and effective administration of the sport of rugby in Zimbabwe,” the commission said.

The SRC also reminded the union’s leadership of their obligation to operate within the country’s legal framework.

“The Sports and Recreation Commission takes this opportunity to remind the current composition of both the Board and the Executive that they are obliged to comply with the General Laws of Zimbabwe, including the Sports and Recreation Commission Act,” the letter states.

The commission anchored its intervention in Section 6 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act [Chapter 25:15], which mandates it to monitor compliance and uphold corporate governance standards across national sports bodies.

The SRC further warned that it could escalate action should the ZRU fail to comply with its directive.

The commission has requested written confirmation of the board’s resignation, including the names and positions of all affected members.

Copies of the correspondence were also sent to the Minister of Youth, Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, relevant ministry officials, and members of the SRC Board of Commissioners.
