The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has allocated R82 million to introduce Video Assistant Referee technology in South African football.

The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the South African Football Association and the Premier Soccer League, aims to enhance the integrity and quality of the game.

The budget will cover referee training, procurement of VAR technology, stadium upgrades, and the establishment of a dedicated VAR Training Centre.

Part of the allocation will also be directed toward improving stadium safety infrastructure, particularly emergency communication systems.

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie said the move aligns South African football with global standards.

“The system will enhance the integrity and quality of South African football,” McKenzie stated.

The DSAC has urged stakeholders to ensure that the rollout is completed within the current financial year.
