The government has taken decisive action to protect students and staff at Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe by revoking the operating license of a gold mining company that was conducting leaching activities near the school.
“There is no illegal mining there. In fact, there was a miner conducting gold leaching nearby, but his licence was cancelled and he will be relocating soon,” said Kwekwe District Development Co-ordinator Fortunate Mpungu.
Presidential Special Advisor on Monitoring Government Programmes and Projects, Jorum Gumbo, emphasised the need for urgent regulations to curb illicit mining, warning that decisive action is required to safeguard communities and the environment.
“We need to move with urgency in introducing regulations to tackle illicit mining activities,” Gumbo said.
Globe and Phoenix Primary School was decommissioned in 2023 after suffering structural damage caused by illegal mining. More than 1,300 pupils have since been learning temporarily at Russell Primary School grounds.
To provide a safe and modern learning environment, the government constructed a new school at a cost of US$600 000.
