Learners injured as classroom collapses into illegal mine shaft

Seven learners were injured when a classroom block at Kwekwe’s Globe and Phoenix Primary School caved in while they were in class.

There have been rampant illegal mining activities underneath the school grounds and Zim Now reported in December that gold panners in the area were threatening the safety of learners at the institution.

The school has been under siege from illegal gold panners who randomly dug within its premises, forcing the institution to decommission some of its classroom blocks in 2022

It is reported that the illegal miners have dug inside classrooms with some trenches running underneath classroom blocks and no action was ever taken to stop them, despite the threat the activities posed on the learners.

The collapse of the classrooms was caused by illegal mining activities.
