ZPC Employees in US$3.8 Million Economic Sabotage Storm

Two senior employees of the Zimbabwe Power Company have appeared in court, facing charges of stealing company property worth US$3 896 000 in what the state has branded a serious act of economic sabotage.

Stores Officer Tawanda Mhaka and Loss Control Assistant Ruth Chiyani were arrested on September 11, 2025, after CCTV footage allegedly captured them facilitating the illegal loading of a massive haul of company assets.

According to prosecutors, the stolen goods included 15 electric motors, 48 tonnes of brass pipes, and a metal container, which were loaded onto haulage trucks hired by an accomplice who remains at large.

The court heard that footage from the Turbine Hall, dated August 22 and 23, 2025, shows the accused overseeing the movement of property valued at US$3 896 000 without the required documentation.

The state alleges that Chiyani, whose role was to ensure security compliance, failed to provide invoices, while Mhaka instructed a boilermaker to cut the motor and container to make them easier to load.

The National Prosecuting Authority emphasized the gravity of the case, stating: “This case serves as a clear example of the accountability required of those entrusted with national assets. Economic sabotage will be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible will face serious consequences.”

Both Mhaka and Chiyani have been remanded in custody, with prosecutors citing “overwhelming” evidence, including CCTV footage and signed removal authority documents.
