Cop in Court over sale of riot gear

A 34-year-old police officer has appeared in court facing charges of criminal abuse of duty after allegedly selling police uniforms for personal gain.

Muteswa Shamain Dzingai, who is stationed at Mkushi Academy and resides at the ZRP File Avenue Flats in Harare, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court accused of unlawfully distributing official police apparel.

According to the State, represented by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, the incident occurred in early September when fellow officer Justice Chasiya, based at the Police Band, allegedly approached Dzingai seeking assistance in sourcing riot trousers, STU caps, and grey shirts.

Dzingai is alleged to have supplied Chasiya with 40 riot trousers, 50 STU caps, and 20 grey shirts in exchange for a payment of US$1,000. Chasiya reportedly went on to resell the uniforms to other police officers.

The State contends that Dzingai’s actions were unlawful and contrary to the conduct expected of a public officer, as police uniforms are not meant for commercial distribution.

The offence came to light on October 23, 2025, when Chasiya was arrested and implicated Dzingai during investigations.

Dzingai has been remanded and is expected to return to court on November 25, 2025.
