
Zimbabwe and Russia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen bilateral cooperation in sports and recreation, marking a new chapter in relations between the two countries.
The agreement was sealed on the sidelines of the 2025 “Russia – Country of Sports” Forum, where Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Anselam Sanyatwe, met with Alexander Nikitin, the State Secretary for Sports of the Russian Federation.
Minister Sanyatwe described the signing as a “historic milestone” that underscores the two nations’ shared commitment to promoting sports development and enhancing people-to-people exchanges.

"Our engagement focused on strengthening cooperation in the areas of sport and recreation, leading to the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between our two sister nations,” Sanyatwe said. “This milestone reflects our shared commitment to advancing sports development and fostering people-to-people ties through recreation and athletic exchange.”
The discussions centered on capacity building, youth exchange programmes, sports science, and infrastructure development. The MoU also opens opportunities for Zimbabwean athletes and coaches to benefit from Russian expertise and training facilities.
Sanyatwe was accompanied by Muponisi Dzapasi, Deputy Ambassador of Zimbabwe in Russia, Col. Shara Taderera, and Russian officials Alina Stebneva, Director of the Department of International Cooperation, and Eugenia Pavlova, Deputy Director of the same department.
The agreement comes as Zimbabwe continues to strengthen ties with strategic partners in various sectors, aligning with the country’s drive toward enhanced international cooperation.
