Following intervention by the presidium, the late Mighty Warrior and Black Rhinos striker Rufaro “Mafidi” Machingura will get a decent burial in which the state will assist financially and materially.
Acting Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, George Charamba, made the revelations saying,
“After consultations with the President, the Acting President General (Rtd) Dr C.G.D.N Chiwenga has announced that the government has granted a State-assisted funeral for Rufaro Machingura.
“This means the government will bear all the costs associated with the late footballer’s funeral.”
The state assistance comes at a time when the family had extended an SOS to the football fraternity asking for help in laying to rest their kin who passed on last Thursday in Retreat Park, Waterfalls. She is expected to be buried today.
Machingura, a gifted footballer who was comfortable using both legs, is largely famed for scoring the goal which sank South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the COSAFA Women’s Final at Rufaro Stadium in 2011, which enabled the Mighty Warriors to win the championship.
This led to the coining of the phrase ‘Rufaro akagohwesa muRufaro nyika ikava ne Rufaro” (Rufaro scored at Rufaro Stadium giving joy to the nation)
Mourners are gathered at House Number 4617 Retreat Park, Waterfalls, in Harare.
