Identified as Kind Kupe, the prophet who led the December baptism of congregants who later drowned during the ceremony in Bramley Park, Johannesburg, is reported to have fled to Zimbabwe.
South African Police have, however, confirmed having located and recorded a statement from him before he left for his country of origin.
The incident happened in Jukskei River when 14 members of an apostolic sect gathered for the baptism were swept away by a heavy current.
Kupe, also known as “Mvundla” in the religious circles, is said to have survived after congregants rescued him. He stayed in Alexandra.
Fourteen worshippers were swept away and they have since been identified by their family members.
Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said they had been in contact with Kupe since the day of the tragedy, but that they have since lost contact with him.
Reports from SA say the pastor was not running a formal church, but used the Jukskei River as a place to perform rituals for people who came to him for consultations.
