Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko, yesterday, January 9, approved a draft agreement – decree No. 4 - with Zimbabwe on the setting up of a permanent cooperation commission.
The draft agreement becomes the foundation for the initiation and arrangement of negotiations between the two countries and to that effect, the Belarus Ministry of Foreign Affairs has now been authorized to conduct the negotiations and sign the agreement if the parties come to terms within limits of the approved draft.
Following a three-day state visit earlier by Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa to Minsk in January 2019, a number of MoUs were signed then in the areas of science and technology, innovation, transport, trade and economic co-operation and agriculture.
Zimbabwe has since received equipment for use at Hwange Colliery to boost production, as well as to the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation where it has boosted diamond mining output.
In 2022 Belarus opened up an embassy in Harare with an aim to deepen the relations between the two countries. Dr Alexander Sidoruk was appointed ambassador.
“Belarus considers Zimbabwe as a key partner in the region and the opening of the embassy will allow as to pursue further our areas of interest in the country,” he said on taking oath of office.
