A Chiweshe man was on Thursday sentenced to 15 months in prison for assaulting his pregnant lover Tarisai Mandevana during a dispute after she eloped.

Brian Kambanje, 33, of Musandisora Village under Chief Makope was convicted of assault on his own plea of guilt when he appeared before Concession magistrate Joshua Nembaware.

Nembaware suspended nine months of the sentence conditionally for five years.

The remainder was also suspended on condition Kambanje completes 210 hours of community service at Chaona Primary School.

The court heard that on December 23, 2022, Tarisai’s aunt Modester Mandevana, her sister Irene Mandevana and their colleague Enita Chimbai escorted her to Kambanje’s house with the intention of leaving her there because she was pregnant.

They told Kambanje about the issue on arrival, but his wife could not stomach the news and a fight broke out.

However, when they were about to leave, Kambanje picked up a stick and assaulted Tarisai several times on the back and chest and she sustained injuries on the chest and left shoulder.

She made a police report, leading to Kambanje’s arrest.
