A 34-year-old lawyer employed by the Ministry of Justice was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment at the Gokwe Magistrates’ Court for raping a four-year-old.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the accused, Mike Mudara took the four-year-old to his home after her father had been involved in a brawl with an unknown man.
“When they got to the accused person’s home he asked the complainant to lie down on the sofa, removed her underwear and raped her.
“He told her that he was applying some medicine onto her and afterwards, he threatened to beat her if she told her father of the incident,” NPA said.
The matter was unearthed when the four-year-old’s aunt saw her scratching her private parts and asked her why she was doing so.
The complainant told her aunt what had happened, leading to Mudara’s arrest.
The NPA agitated for a stiff penalty as the accused person is an employee in the justice delivery sector who knows better about the protection of children and their rights.
Cabinet approved amendments to the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act to introduce stiff penalties for sexual assault perpetrators.
Under the proposed amendment, those convicted of rape and aggravated assault will soon face a minimum mandatory 15-year jail term.
