A man from Lobengula in Bulawayo was on Monday jailed for 15 years for raping his five-year-old daughter repeatedly.
The 37-year-old man appeared before magistrate Sibongile Marondedze, who convicted him of rape and sentenced him to 15 years in jail, before suspending three years for five years on condition of good behaviour.
This leaves the man to effectively serve 12 years in jail.
In mitigation, the convict told the court that he had no bank account, did not own any property and had other children to look after.
The magistrate said the convict had failed to protect his child as a father.
The offences, according to prosecutor Sehliselo Khumalo, were committed last year.
The daughter narrated her ordeal to a neighbour in November last year, but the neighbour did not believe her story.
It was only after the toddler’s aunt later heard the story that she her maid to interview her.
The child revealed that her father was sexually abusing her, and the matter was reported to the police, leading to his arrest.
A medical report was produced in court as evidence.
