Invictus Fitness Centre, where Kudakwashe “TakeMoney” Chiwandire is training for her upcoming bout in Mexico, is set open a fitness studio in Mufakose this year.
Speaking to Zimbabwe Now on behalf of IFC, Kelly Mtisi, who is also a trainer, said people in the ghetto are talented but they lack exposure.
“We discovered that at the ghetto there is a lot of talent which lacks exposure. Most of the people there are less privileged and they cannot afford to pay for sessions.
“It will be a non-profitable studio hence we will be seeking sponsorship from well-wishers but our first sponsor will be the City Council and those with facilities that can help us establish the studios either grounds or buildings,” he said.
The studio will be providing karate, aerobics and some activities to keep the young people busy.
He said the studio will target the 10-20 years age group.
“They always say catch them young. If they start sporting at a tender age, it helps them to identify their talents and chase them.
“Those that have grown up have some responsibilities and some challenges they are facing, so it may be difficult for us to invite them for our sessions,” he added.
Mtisi said sport is of paramount importance as it helps young people in their future and encouraged mostly the girl child to take part in fitness sessions.
“Like what you can see from Kudakwashe Chiwandire, she has gone to many countries because of sport.
“Sometimes we will come with professional boxers and champions like Chiwandire to encourage the girl child to engage in such kind of sports since society has always assumed that boxing or karate is meant for males only,” he said.
Chiwandire is a World Boxing Council interim super-bantamweight female champion and is scheduled to meet the Mexican holder, Yeimi Yamleth Mercado, in two months’ time in Mexico City at a date yet to be announced.
IFC offers fitness services and classes, from Zumba to Cardio, Gym, Spin, step, taebo, crossfit as well as superfit.
Its long-term resolution is also to open studios in other ghettos, including Mbare, Highfield among others where drug and substance abuse is rampant.
