Police have arrested two men after intercepting a stolen Toyota Hilux Raider being ferried from Beitbridge to Harare during a festive season security operation.

In a statement, police said Lucky Dube, 39, and Tapiwa Dube, 45, were arrested on 29 December 2025 at a roadblock mounted at the 103-kilometre peg along the Harare–Masvingo Road in Featherstone. The vehicle was being towed by a wrecker when officers stopped it for inspection.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the Toyota Hilux Raider had been stolen in Pretoria, South Africa, and was fitted with fake vehicle and radio licences as well as number plates belonging to a different motor vehicle.

The suspects are expected to appear in court as investigations continue.

The arrest comes as part of a sustained crackdown by both South African and Zimbabwean authorities on cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates, with Zimbabwe remaining a key destination for stolen high-value vehicles, particularly pickup trucks and SUVs.

South African police have, in recent years, secured multiple convictions against smugglers linked to Zimbabwe-bound theft rings, with sentences ranging from five to over ten years’ imprisonment.
