PSL Gate Fee Hike Sparks Fan Outcry

The decision by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to revise matchday gate charges has triggered widespread concern and criticism among football supporters across Zimbabwe.

The PSL board recently confirmed that new minimum entry fees will apply for the remainder of the season. Under the revised structure, fans will pay US$5 for the rest of the ground, US$15 for VIP or grandstand seating, and US$25 for VVIP access. The league said the increase was necessary due to rising operational costs associated with hosting matches.

However, many supporters argue that the price increase does not reflect the current standard of local football or the condition of stadium facilities.

Tinashe Charles Jimi expressed frustration over the decision, saying he would rather spend his money elsewhere. “Five dollars to watch Herentals wasting 97 minutes? I would rather watch old highlights on ZBC and buy one dollar’s worth of data to live stream,” he said, suggesting that matches such as the clash between Agama Football Club and Manica Diamonds FC in Mutare could attract very few spectators.

Another supporter, Pindai Sibanda, warned that the decision could harm clubs financially if fans stay away from stadiums. “Your football is not as in demand as you think. You will end up breaking these teams with these charges,” he said.

Fans also raised concerns about the condition of some stadiums, arguing that facilities should be improved before ticket prices are increased. Gerald Tanaka Maromo cited conditions at Baobab Stadium and Ascot , saying spectators are often left standing or sitting on bare concrete.

“Let’s find other things to do. Five dollars to sit on concrete is painful. Baobab Stadium does not even have proper seating space, and you expect people to leave five dollars there for ants,” he said, adding that authorities should first upgrade facilities before hiking prices.

PSL supported their move, saying clubs are facing increasing financial obligations when hosting matches.

“This increase has been necessitated by the rising cost of matchday-related services, statutory levies and tax obligations that clubs are required to meet in the staging of PSL matches,” the PSL board said in a statement.

Criticism from supporters continued online, with many questioning whether the fan experience has improved enough to justify the higher charges.

One supporter, Inno Nyangara, highlighted poor stadium conditions at Rufaro Stadium. “What have you improved that justifies these changes? On the ordinary side at Rufaro you are beaten by the sun, and when it rains you get soaked even inside. In the upper grandstand you cannot properly see the ball because of the viewing angles and the metal structures,” he said.

Another fan, Munyika Hope, said only Chahwanda Stadium might justify the new price, arguing that many supporters also face travel costs to attend matches.

“Only Chahwanda Stadium deserves that fee. At some stadiums you get bitten by ants and have poor conditions. Many of us travel from different parts of the country, so we also need money for transport. Not all clubs even provide transport for supporters,” he said.

football followers suggests league must balance financial sustainability with affordability to avoid empty stadiums, a challenge that has long affected local football attendance.
