A Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority employee has been arrested after allegedly attempting to extort US$300 from a resident in exchange for restoring electricity at a property in St Mary’s, Chitungwiza.
The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission confirmed the arrest, saying Wellington Tsaurai Chinyemba, who works as a Revenue Assistant at ZESA, had disconnected power at the premises, claiming the property had illegal connections.

Following the disconnection, Chinyemba is alleged to have demanded US$300 from the property owner, Clever Mpofu, in order to reconnect the electricity and waive what he claimed were penalties linked to the alleged illegal connection.
ZACC said Mpofu later sought clarification from ZESA and was informed that the demand was not legitimate. This prompted him to report the matter to the anti-corruption body.
“A trap was set, leading to the accused person’s arrest. Chinyemba is expected to appear in court soon,” ZACC said.
Authorities continue to warn public officials against engaging in corrupt practices, as efforts to curb bribery and abuse of office intensify across the country.
