A Mutare magistrate has granted US$100 bail to two police officers accused of assaulting Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission investigators.
Sergeant Mduduzi Makina, 39, and Constable Elliot Gava, 42, both stationed at Sakubva Police Station, were arrested following an altercation with ZACC officials who had apprehended a fellow officer for bribery.
The duo appeared in court on Tuesday and were remanded to January 10, 2025, for trial.
According to the State, on December 11, 2024, the ZACC team observed police officers at a checkpoint near Mutare Teachers College soliciting bribes from motorists.
The investigators moved to arrest Constable Peace Muchenje and confiscated a roadblock declaration book as evidence.
Makina and Gava allegedly confronted the ZACC team, demanding the return of the book. During the tussle, the suspects reportedly dragged a ZACC investigator from their vehicle, twisted his arm, and seized the car keys.
They fled the scene with the declaration book.
