A man was on New Year’s eve assaulted to death for stealing a bottle of whisky at a shebeen, the Harare Magistrates’ Court heard Friday, January 20.
George Hungwe, 37, of Sally Mugabe Heights is now being charged with murder or, alternatively, violating Section 47 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23.
The state alleges that on December 31, 2022 around 1630 hours, the now deceased was at Sally Mugabe Heights at a Shabeen known as "paWelly” which is owned by Wellington Muzowa.
The deceased bought a whisky called Number 9 and immediately went away, taking another bottle of whisky belonging to one of the patrons known as Lanchord.
Prosper Pawakarambwa, Batanai Vande and Wonder Nhemachena who were also some of the patrons in the shebeen made a follow up of the deceased and located him at his place of residence consuming the whisky.
The trio brought him back to the shebeen accusing him of stealing Lanchord's whisky.
An altercation arose between the now deceased and Hungwe who owns a pool table located at the same shebeen. Hungwe assaulted the now deceased and he fell on the ground.
On the same date at about 1900 hours, Hungwe in the company of other unidentified patrons, were seen escorting the now deceased away from the shopping centre.
On the following day at around 0600 hours, the body of the deceased was found naked on the window with the lower part of the body inside the room while the upper part was hanging outside.
The body had a deep cut on the left thigh and also on the foot with a knife close to the body.
Investigations were later carried out by police detectives leading to Hungwe's arrest.
Hungwe appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi who ordered him to appear in court on February 6 for routine remand.
He was advised to approach the High Court for bail because of the magnitude of his crime.
