Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe launches Blue Roots Initiative on Earth Day

Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe has marked this year’s Earth Day with the launch of its Blue Roots Initiative, a tree-planting programme aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and supporting long term ecological resilience.

The initiative was officially unveiled on 23 April 2026 at Stanbic Bank Park, the future site of the bank’s new head office, where senior leadership led a ceremonial tree-planting event. The programme forms part of the broader commitment by Standard Bank Group to plant one million trees across Africa.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Solomon Nyanhongo said the initiative reflects the bank’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations and long-term strategy.

“The launch of the Blue Roots Initiative is a clear statement of intent. It reflects how we see our role as a bank ,not only as a financial partner to our clients, but as an organisation that is deeply invested in the long-term sustainability of the environments and communities in which we operate,” he said.

Nyanhongo added that commemorating Earth Day through tree planting demonstrates the bank’s practical approach to sustainability. “Marking Earth Day by planting trees at our future Head Office demonstrates that sustainability is embedded in how we build, how we grow and how we do business,” he said.

The event was led by Board Chairman Muchakanakirwa Mukanganwi, alongside senior executives, underscoring leadership’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Mukanganwi highlighted the broader significance of the initiative, noting its alignment with both business growth and sustainable development.

“This initiative speaks to our commitment to achieving the highest standards of sustainability while ensuring value creation for our stakeholders,” he said.

The trees planted  including Buffalo Thorn, Schotia and Wild Gardenia  are indigenous species selected to enhance biodiversity and environmental resilience.
