
Police in Gweru have issued a warning to businesses and the public following a case of counterfeit United States dollar notes circulating in the city, with a local shop already defrauded.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Gweru Urban District confirmed that a Ford Everest, described as a mid-size seven-seater SUV bearing registration number AHH 0950, is being linked to the use of fake US$100 notes.
The incident occurred in Athlone on April 26 at around 6PM, where a shop was reportedly duped using counterfeit currency.
ZRP Gweru Urban District Community Relations Liaison Officer Assistant Inspector Kurewa said members of the public should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
He said police are tracking the vehicle and warned that anyone who comes across individuals attempting to use counterfeit notes should immediately alert authorities.

Assistant Inspector Kurewa urged businesses, particularly retailers, to exercise caution when handling large denominations of cash, noting that fake notes are often difficult to detect without proper checks.
He said people should carefully inspect United States dollar bills for key security features such as watermarks, security threads and colour-shifting ink.
The warning comes as concerns grow over the circulation of counterfeit foreign currency in urban centres, exposing businesses to financial losses and undermining confidence in cash transactions.
Assistant Inspector Kurewa said increased vigilance by the public and business community will play a critical role in curbing the spread of fake notes.
He urged residents to share information widely to help others remain alert, adding that caution is especially important when dealing with unknown individuals or unusual transactions.
