Castle Tankard 2026: Record Field of 20 Horses Set for Borrowdale

The 2026 Castle Tankard is set to be one of the biggest in history as a full field of 20 horses prepares to compete for the top prize at the Borrowdale Racecourse on 9 May. This 66th edition of Zimbabwe's most famous horse race marks a major milestone, as it has been ten years since the event last saw such a large number of runners. This year, the competition will be held under the exciting theme "Live it, feel it, share it."

Defending champion trainer Debra Swanson is already dominating the headlines after entering nine horses into the race. This means nearly half the horses on the track will come from her stable alone. Last year, Swanson secured the US$50,000 prize with her horse, Action Zone. The talented five-year-old gelding is returning this year to defend his title against a much larger group of challengers. Swanson noted that while the increased competition will make the race much harder, she is pleased to see the sport growing and is aiming for record-breaking times.

Despite the excitement, the racing industry is currently facing significant financial challenges. Swanson explained that the costs of breeding and maintaining racehorses are very high, making the Castle Tankard a vital lifeline for local stables. She expressed her gratitude to the main sponsor, Delta Corporation, for their continued support despite the difficult economic outlook. For the trainers, the prize money is essential to keep their businesses running, though they remain driven by a deep passion for sportsmanship and horse racing.

Other top trainers are also preparing for a tough fight on the turf. Thomas Mason, Bridget Stidolph, and Amy Parham have each entered three horses to challenge Swanson’s dominance. Thomas Mason observed that having 20 horses in the field is a clear sign that the competition is attracting more attention than it has in a decade. He warned that while everyone is watching the defending champion, Action Zone, the size of the field means that no competitor can be overlooked.

Delta Corporation’s Marketing Director, Irimayi Muzorewa, confirmed that the sponsors have once again put up a US$50,000 prize package for the winning connections. He stated that the prestige of the Tankard continues to draw elite horses, skilled jockeys, and dedicated trainers from across the Southern African region.

The day will offer more than just high-stakes racing, as a major entertainment line-up has been planned for the fans. Once the main race is over, the crowd will be treated to a massive concert featuring popular music stars Alick Macheso, Nisha Ts, and Ndunge Yut, ensuring the event ends on a high note.
